Step 5: Choose the Best Lewis Structure

Once the formal charges have been assigned, you can choose the best Lewis structure for CH2Cl2. The best Lewis structure is the one that has the lowest formal charges on the atoms. If two or more structures have the same formal charges, then the structure with the most single bonds is preferred.
The Lewis structure of CH2Cl2 can be determined by counting the total number of valence electrons, placing the atoms and bonding them together, and completing octets. Once all the valence electrons have been shared, formal charges should be assigned to the atoms.
